Look at those Kels sheets closely - they appear complex at first, but they're actually layerings of much simpler components - why not consider using illustrator, for example - to keep lines clean and shapes simple - or use the polygon tool/custom shapes in Photoshop - it's a different method, and it might not 'explain itself' first - but look at the Kels designs and try and recreate a few of them, before applying what you learn to your characters. Don't rush, Polly - look.
